The World Buddhist Summit was grandly held at the Mahapassana Cave (Great Cave) on Kaba Aye Hillock, Yangon, Myanmar
from 9 to 11 December 2004. The State Peace and Develoopment Council of the Union of Myanmar Chairman Senior General Than Shwe and
Vice-Chairman Vice-Senior General Maung Aye attended the auspicious opening ceremony and respectfully paid respect to the Mahatheras (Chief monks)
and donated Buddha statues to them.
Present on the auspicious occasion were State Patron Mahatheras, elder monks of different sects, the State Sanghamahanayaka Committee,
member sayadaws of the State Central Working Committee of Sangha, Chairman-sayadaws of State/ Divisional Sanghanayaka Committees of different sects,
Mahayana Chief monks and elder nuns.
In addition, Sangharajas from Cambodia and Sri Lanka and Chief monks from India, Sri Lanka, Bangaladesh, Australia, Germany, Canada, United
States of America, Great Britain, Netherland, Switzaland, Thai, Japan, Cambodia, Nepal, Indonesia, Sweden, Jamaca and Singapore attended the World
Buddhist Summit as participants.
And also, the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Chairman Senior General Than Shwe and wife,
Vice-Chairman Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and wife, members of the State Peace and Development Council and wives, and Prime
Minister of the Democratic Republic of Laos, Prime Minister of Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Laos, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, Foreign Mnister of
Thailand, Minister for Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal and Foreign Ambassadors in Yangon, Buddhist Scholors,
observers and delegates from 36 nations attended the world Buddhist Summit.
Besides, Prime Mnister of the Socialist Democratic Republic of Sir Lanka attended the auspicious
closing ceremony of the world Buddhist Summit on 11 December 2004.
